Arduino arrived and other stuff

As I wrote earlier, I ordered and Arduino Duemanilove and a Protoshield from eBay. Early this week it arrived and I was thrilled to get my hands on it. I haven’t had much chance to play with it yet, as we’ve had an immense snowstorm here. It’s been snowing for at least 4 days straight now, and that ammounts to over 4 feet of snow during those days alone. My back’s out and more snow is coming down. I don’t have much components lying around, as I forgot to order them and there’s no way I can drive to get some. I have some stuff I want to try but for now they’ll have to wait.

Not really an idea but…

This isn’t really an idea as I’ve already built one of these, and the other one is not mine.
First: I’ve been into model rocketry almost as long as I’ve been tinkering. Started out with some simple store bought rocket and moved into (of course) making these things myself. Rocket motors are dangerous and when firing you should be a safe distance away. A 9V battery is sufficient to fire the starter but that’s not a decent solution for a maker. I did some searching and thinking and came up with the VERY high voltage circuit from a disposable camera. This thing cranks out about 400V and is VERY DANGEROUS! You should only attempt to

I came across the YouTube user makemagazine a while back, but forgot about it until I found it again yesterday. There is also a website MakeZine where the videos and content is available.
If you, like me, enjoy taking things apart and putting them back together (might not be in the original shape/way/form), this site is a must-read for ideas.
Photography as a hobby and equipment

Beeing as new as I am, and with a VERY limited budget, until now I have settled on using the kit 18-55mm lens. Looking at myself as an aspiring wildlife photographer, I know I need focal length, and quality lenses. This is a bit into the future for me, but I had to get something I could use. A bit of research and advice from other people, I ended up getting the Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 DG APO Macro.

I came across a site, thanks to a link over at pixalo.com. The site in question is: http://www.ukexpert.co.uk. They’re a photo-competition site, and have a forum-section for users. The problem is their User Agreement, which you have to accept when registering.
Here’s a quote:
By submitting images and messages and other material to ukexpert.co.uk you warrant that you are the copyright owner and that you grant ukexpert.co.uk permanent copyright ownership equal to your own for all materials uploaded. This includes a permanent right for ukexpert.co.uk and its associated systems and companies to make use of them in any way they see fit, including but not limited to use in advertising and promotional material.
This basically states that any images or material you upload, they can use as they see fit, and should they make any money or such, it’s theirs to keep.
I sent information on this to Haje Jan Kamps over at PhotoCritic.org suggesting it might be a good article. He wrote a very detailed article and this can be read here. I strongly suggest you read this, as it includes lots of great advice (also some legal stuff), should you be/get stuck “in the mud”. Read the rest of this entry »
Challenge

I visit PhotoCritic.org every day, most often several times every day. Haje posted a new article today, and this was quite inspirational. You can read the article here: http://www.photocritic.org/2007/photos-as-paintings/
As I’ve just rekindled my hobby, and had the opportunity to move to digital SLR, I’m keen
to try new things. I took photography as an extra class in school, but that class was more for fun than for “real”. We only got cameras, made our filmrolls (BW) and went out shooting. No real theory or education, but I did learn a few things. At that time we really had to think about our shots before shooting, because film was restricted and took time to develop. This is exactly as Haje writes about in his article. I started thinking about this as a whole, and found that one of the reasons for moving to digital, apart from the obvious, was to be able to shoot a great many shots, to increase the chances capture the right one.
Just came across this website

Searched the web today, as I do all the time, and came across this magnificent site. I have also added a new item on the left menu. This will always show the Image of the Day, featured at Earth Shots.
Posting a longer feature tomorrow, on the new “lens/extension” I made, and also a couple of example shots using this. (I’m still a terrible photographer, but you’ll get the point…. Hopefully).
